Players can request a pot count from the dealer at any time in order to know the maximum amount they may bet. As the pot increases, the maximum bet size increases as well, but the minimum bet remains constant. Unlike Limit Texas Hold’em, players can re-raise up to the pot limit until they are all-in or until all but one player has folded. Every round, each player will be dealt 2 cards that only they can see. Then, 5 cards are dealt to the middle of the table in 3 stages for everyone to see.

So the game of Texas Hold’em is as popular as it has ever been. And dreams are still won on the flip of a river card. This is what makes it one of the most exciting card games in the world.

This gives the button a pair of tens, having missed a chance at both a straight and a flush. So, in our $1/$2 example, the first player can either call the $2 big blind amount, raise to at least $4, or fold. Also, be aware of your position at the table, preflop hand selection, and optimal strategies postflop based on your observations and your opponent’s tendencies.

Although the game strategy is complicated, the rules are very simple. Keep in mind that this guide is not designed to make you the best player you can be in an hour, day, or even a month. The point is, there are three emotions that can kill you in poker, and two those emotions are defiance and hope (we’ll get to the third in a second). Defiance makes you want to hold your own against someone throwing their weight against you, but it can lead to disaster if you don’t have the cards. Hope is worse—hope is the thing that keeps you in a hand, betting money that you shouldn’t bet, because maybe the turn or the river could give you that straight or that flush you wanted.
